Our company is proud to service our clients with a unique opportunity to lead the nation in sustainability practices. Gypsum to Gypsum offers this opportunity while catering to economics that are cost-effective. We will continue to stay competitive with our service cost structure because we specialize in handling a single source stream that creates a highly clean recycled gypsum end product. This system has allowed us the opportunity to continue to cultivate strong end markets in the past, present, and future for recycled gypsum.
Our Culture & Mission
Gypsum to Gypsum is a company who is deeply committed to staying ahead of the curve when it comes to best practices around the collection, processing, and distribution of recycled gypsum drywall. Our mission is to keep all drywall diverted from landfills. Through innovation and determination, we can continue to move the ball forward in our global mission to protect and improve the environment that we live in. We pride ourselves in this goal, which requires rigorous integrity when it comes to all aspects of our work. We have saying here “It’s not what you expect but what you inspect.” Furthermore, trust, but always verify!
The company was founded by Christopher J. Stapleton who came from 30+ years of experience in the recycling of construction waste materials. Mr. Stapleton travelled to Oregon where the concept of recycling drywall in a single stream business model began. It all started with the idea that gypsum (Calcium Sulfate), which was a miracle mineral used regularly in commercial farming many years ago, could be extracted from drywall gypsum and could be re-introduced back into agriculture especially in area’s that suffer from difficult water and soil conditions as Oregon does. Mr. Stapleton approached a local blueberry farmer who had been struggling with producing consistent high-quality blueberries from his crop due to poor soil and water conditions. Due to the high cost of transporting gypsum into the Willamette Valley, the farmer did not have access to or the budget to acquire raw gypsum in the area. This blueberry farmer who had been advised to continue to spend more money on petroleum-based products was eager to find an alternative that would yield a different result. The farmer agreed to trial process gypsum from drywall on his crop because of the known effect’s gypsum has in “tight” soil. At the time of harvest the farmer reported a significant change in his crop. His crop went from producing a low-grade blueberry to producing the highest grade blueberry you could produce in size, weight, and thickness of skin resulting in a blueberry that had a significantly longer shelf life. At the same time, his overall cost for fertilizers and water consumption went down that year. Mr. Stapleton and his team decided to dive into the agronomy of these results and became the experts in how this recycled material could benefit farmers. The word spread quickly, and the opportunities began to grow.
Shortly after, Christopher W. Stapleton became a partner at the company in 2019 and assisted his father in opening a new channel for distribution in the commercial markets in Washington. This led to the opening of the second location in Seattle, WA to service the Seattle Metro area for collection and distribution of recycled gypsum in the area. After learning some bumps in the road in year one, Seattle’s location was successful from day one and offered more distribution channels for agriculture. Then 6 months into operation our nation was struck by the COVID-19 pandemic that would have destroyed most first year business. Through grit and determination, we survived during a complete economic shutdown. We were lucky enough that homeowners invested into remodeling their homes, and the construction industry eventually continued to operate.
Today the company is growing and prides itself as being a close-knit family-oriented business. We wake up everyday with a sense of responsibility to drive innovation in our industry to protect the environment that we live in. We believe there will be a day that all drywall waste will be utilized beneficially for the following: enrich the soil we grow in, to offset gypsum mining, provide a stable feedstock supply to commercial application, and reduce toxic gas emissions from landfills. This is our purpose. We look forward to seeing what this bright future can bring.
